A mobile website checklist for local businesses
By Nick Duncan · October 22, 2026
Many people looking for a local business are on a phone, often in a car or standing outside. Here is a simple checklist you can run through on your own phone in a few minutes.
The checklist
- Fits the screen. No sideways scrolling or pinch-to-zoom. That needs a mobile viewport tag and a responsive layout.
- Tap-to-call. Your phone number is a link (tel:) near the top, not just text in an image.
- Hours and location up front. Visitors shouldn't have to dig for when you're open or where you are. Link your address to a map.
- Readable text. Body text around 16px, with strong contrast against the background.
- Big enough buttons. About 44px tall is a common guideline so taps land where intended.
- Loads fast. Compress images and skip scripts you don't need. Google's free PageSpeed Insights shows what slows a page down.
- Secure (HTTPS). Browsers label sites without HTTPS as "Not secure".
- One clear next step. Call, book, order or request a quote.
- No full-screen pop-ups. On phones they hide your content and frustrate visitors.
- Good link previews. Open Graph tags give your site a proper title and image when shared by text or on social media.
